First published in 1984, this comprehensive study offers a systematic re-examination of Soviet society from its inception up to the 1980s. Rather than relying on standard Western geopolitical narratives, Szymanski utilises comparative sociology to evaluate the actual living conditions, civil liberties, and social freedoms of Soviet citizens in contrast with citizens of the United States.

Telling the story of the infamous scandal that became synonymous with the Socialist Workers Party, this book details the year-long struggle for women’s rights and democracy on the British left.

Comrade Delta recalls the sequence of events in 2013, when members of the Socialist Workers Party learnt that their party had mishandled an allegation of rape. The accused was one of the party’s leaders, and those handling the investigations – the leader’s friends – humiliated the complainant, asking demeaning and sexist questions before clearing the accused of all wrongdoing. When members protested the decision, supporters of the party leadership sought to drive the dissidents out of the party. For 12 months, the conflict wore on without resolution as more and more information became known to the members and the public.

Based on internal documents and interviews with more than 50 participants, including each of the main complainants, DK Renton analyses the structures and personalities that shielded the perpetrator while victims were harassed and critics were accused of abandoning Marxism.

The Foundations of Zionism | Sabri Jiryis
£20.00

Waterstones (UK) | Blackwell’s (UK) | Amazon (UK) | Barnes & Noble (US) | Amazon (US) | Massy Books (Canada) | A Different Booklist (Canada) | Kings Co-Op Bookstore (Canada)

Translated into English for the first time since its original publication by the PLO’s Palestine Research Center, this book extensively details the origins of Zionism and its development as an ideology and political project that has wrought havoc in the Middle East and beyond over the last century.

The Foundations of Zionism chronicles this development from Zionism’s early origins up to the establishment of the British mandate over Palestine in 1923, refuting many of the movement’s own foundational myths – from its early relationship to the Palestinians to its exclusively religious character. Sabri Jiryis delves into Zionism’s successive congresses and factional struggles, its early failures to settle in Palestine and the formation of armed militias, and its temporary alliances with the Ottoman Empire before the movement eventually secured support from Western colonial powers such as Britain. In a newly written conclusion, Jiryis reconsiders the Zionist project 100 years on from the Balfour Declaration and amid the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

Racket Theory | Max Horkheimer
£16.00

Preorder soon | Coming December 2026

“The historical course of the proletariat led to a crossroads: it could become a class or a racket. Racket meant privileges within national borders, class meant world revolution. The leaders have relieved the proletariat of this decision.”

Translated into English for the first time, Racket Theory brings together the material written by Max Horkheimer from 1942-1944, with considerable input from Theodor W. Adorno, that analyses state capitalism, the problem of the disappearance of socialist internationalism, and the reactionary turn of the labor movement. Initially intended to be a part of the project that came to be Dialectic of Enlightenment, the pieces collected in this volume demonstrate the development of the Frankfurt School’s socio-psychological studies of the psychological internalization of class domination in the 1930s and also includes essays and aphorisms from the Critical Theory Working Group on the economic limits of rackets to collectivization and the Spanish Civil War. Racket theory unifies Horkheimer and Adorno’s political and economic reflections, becoming an essential step in the development of their characterization of the impersonal domination of capitalist society, the fundamental commonalities between fascism and liberal capitalism, and the worthlessness of reformism.

On Zionist Literature | Ghassan Kanafani
£12.00

Waterstones (UK) | Blackwell’s (UK) | Amazon (UK)
Barnes & Noble (US) | Amazon (US) | Ethical Book Search (Global)

Translated into English for the first time after its publication in 1967, Ghassan Kanafani's On Zionist Literature makes an incisive analysis of the body of literary fiction written in support of the Zionist colonization of Palestine.

Interweaving his literary criticism of works by George Eliot, Arthur Koestler, and many others with a historical materialist narrative, Kanafani identifies the political intent and ideology of Zionist literature, demonstrating how the myths used to justify the Zionist-imperialist domination of Palestine first emerged and were repeatedly propagated in popular literary works in order to generate support for Zionism and shape the Western public’s understanding of it.

The new preface by Anni Kanafani and an introduction by Steven Salaita place On Zionist Literature in its broader historical context and make a compelling case for its ongoing significance more than five decades since its original publication, illustrating the extent to which “Kanafani was a searing and incisive critic, at once generous in his understanding of emotion and form and unsparing in his assessment of politics and myth.”

On David Renton’s Comrade Delta

“An honest, balanced, and well-documented account of an appalling episode. If the left is to progress, it must learn from its own history.”

Ian Birchall, author of Tiny Cliff: A Marxist for His Time (Bookmarks, 2011)

On Alex Charnley and Michael Richmond’s Fascism and the Women’s Cause

“This book is a tremendous resource and an exciting, theoretically sophisticated achievement. At a time when certain feminisms have reasserted themselves as one of fascism's forms of appearance, Alex Charnley and Michael Richmond's intervention could not be more critical.”

Sophie Lewis, author of Full Surrogacy Now: Feminism Against Family (Verso, 2019)

On Sabri Jiryis’ The Foundations of Zionism

“A foundational and vital work. Jiryis’ book is indispensable reading for anyone seeking to understand Zionism's monstrous rise from myth to mandate, and a sobering reminder that there is no redeeming it.”

Mohammed el-Kurd, Palestinian writer and poet

“On Zionist Literature is extremely valuable for readers to understand how literature and art were effectively ‘weaponised’ to justify Zionism's ideological pretensions and the erasure of Palestinian history. Half a century after his assassination, Kanafani's critique stands as a powerful challenge to still-prevalent Zionist myths.”
